Airlie Beach once considered the exclusive domain of backpackers is emerging as a luxury getaway to rival the islands. Airlie is so accessible, with direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane it's the perfect base to explore all the Whitsundays has to offer. Unlike the islands, all the major attractions depart from Airlie Beach, so you have your pick of the adventure activities.
Arriving at our apartment at Marina Shores, I'm overcome by the jaw-dropping views. Panoramic water views dotted with sailing boats on the horizon are mesmerising. Yes, this will do nicely.
The spacious apartment boasts an upper level sun deck and on the main level open plan lounge, dining and kitchen area opening out to a large tiled private balcony to further enjoy the breathtaking Whitsunday views. The private balcony is the ideal spot for sunset drinks, just be careful of the cheeky cockatoos that are rather keen to join you!
Our two bedroom apartment is well equipped for an extended stay with full kitchen, including oven, microwave and Nespresso machine, so you can easily settle in lazily for days. Unlike many serviced apartments, Marina Shores takes it up a notch providing guests with a small minibar of essentials at very reasonable prices.
Marina Shores has a range of room types to suit any group size from one to four bedrooms with a choice of an ocean, marina or garden view. There's an onsite pool surrounded by lush gardens and free undercover parking. It's within walking distance of restaurants at Abell Point Marina or great local hidden gem Fat Frog Café.
The service at Marina Shores is friendly and welcoming with Manager Rowena offering local knowledge, recommendations and able to book tours & attractions for you. Marina Shores embraces technology with great features such as SMS confirmations and updates on arrival including sending your free WiFi passwords.
Airlie's coming of age in the culinary stakes too. Enter Walter's Lounge, which opened onto the Airlie Beach dining scene a little over 18 months ago primarily as a cocktail bar but has garnered a legion of fans with its inventive cuisine and top notch service. Owner Heath is also the resident bartender so I'm surprised there isn't an extensive cocktail menu, instead there is a list of specials scrawled on the wall, which changes regularly and I suspect he could shake & stir anything you wished to request. For a special occasion we recommend you indulge in Walter's Lounge's shared tasting menu with matched wines for just $85 per person. The food is incredible and Walter's Lounge has recently been recognised with an AGFG Chef's Hat.
If you're planning a tropical escape this year, head to the Whitsundays for endless blue skies, sunshine and adventure. Marina Shores is a great base to explore all that this magical region has to offer.
