Insiders Guide: Discover Brisbane with The Urban List Founder

You all know The Urban List, the curated guide to your life in the city; trusted recommendations of where to eat, drink, shop & more. A Brisbane success story, The Urban List started in 2011 and has since expanded to include Sydney, Melbourne, Perth and Auckland. We asked founder, Susannah George her favourite tips for exploring Brisbane... b2ap3_thumbnail_susannah-collage.jpg

alluxia: What do you love most about living in Brisbane?

Susannah: Our home! And the fact that our families are less than 10 minutes away. We had a little boy this year and New Farm has been wonderful to us! River walks, park hangs and great coffee all at our finger tips. (The coffee part has been particularly necessary!)

The restaurant that best shows off your city...

Bar Alto – consistently excellent, fresh Italian and warm, welcoming service. Sitting outside on the deck, overlooking the river is my favourite way to spend a Sunday.

When friends are in town I take them for a drink at...

Gerard's Bar

Couples wanting a romantic dinner for two should consider...

Urbane – a Brisbane institution that just gets better every year!

The best breakfast spot is...

Kin & Co on Macquarie Street, Newstead – everything is presented so beautifully, and it's run by a family which brings a really authentic dynamic to everything they do.

The best coffee can be found at...

Jamie's Espresso on Robertson.

For the perfect gift or momento, I'd recommend shopping at...

camargue on James Street (for the girls) and Jocelyn's Provisions (for edible treats for everyone).

The best markets can be explored at...

The Powerhouse every Saturday morning – don't miss the Portuguese custard tarts!

For great art and culture...

IMA below the Judith Wright Centre for rising contemporary art stars, Milani Gallery in Woolloongabba for curated showings of Australia's top political artists, and GOMA for the big hitters. If you can get tickets to the Queensland Ballet, do! They're incredible!

The best free activity in the city is...

Hiking the fire trails up Mt Coot-tha or heading to Noosa for a walk through the National Park to Hell's Gates.

If it's raining...

Work your way through the galleries above, along with Edwina Corlette, Phillip Bacon and Jan Murphy – all on Brunswick Street.

What's the "Must See" attraction in Brisbane...

The river – walking the loop from New Farm, around the city, across to South Bank and under the Kangaroo Point cliffs is one of my favourite things to do. (And of course, after 8kms you're entitled to feast.)

Brisbane's best kept secret...

I don't know if it's a secret, but for unbelievable Chinese tucked away in the suburbs, head to Sichuan Bang Bang.

Your favourite weekend getaway?

The Southern Beaches of the GC so my wife can surf and I can walk for kilometres along the sand (now, with Baby Bjorn!)
