No35 Kitchen & Bar Cabarita Beach Review

The opening of a new modern Italian Restaurant on Australia’s most beautiful beach is just another reason to visit Cabarita Beach in The Tweed.

No.35 Kitchen & Bar is the newest dining destination on the Tweed Coast, with Bondi’s Icebergs alumni of Daniel Medcalf and Rachel Duff at the helm. Medcalf is returning to his Northern Rivers roots, having worked at a series of Sydney fine diners including Assiette and internationally at Bali’s The Slow before returning to his hometown to bring the North Coast some modern Italian flavours.

Open for dinner Thursday through to Sunday and weekend lunch, the minimalist, industrial style interiors allow the food to shine against a backdrop of billowing curtains, natural table settings and lush banquette seating.

We visited No.35 on their opening weekend and returned for their reopening post-lockdown, just in time to sample the new spring menu.

Since opening, No.35’s luxe riff on the humble fish finger sandwich has been making waves. Crunchy crumbed local snapper with pickles, dill, mayo and more squished between the softest bread provides nostalgic vibes and we predict will gain cult status by summer.

The spring menu features a selection of new items such as local Calamari with roast garlic and chilli aioli and fennel salami, garden pickles and sesame grissini in the small plates section while retaining popular items like arancini filled with garden peas and parmesan and the aforementioned fish finger sandwich, which we pray never leaves.

With a menu designed for sharing, the waitstaff are accommodating and cheerfully adjust the size of dishes on request to cater for the number of guests, this means no fighting over the last arancini!

Large plates for the famished feature items such as bucatini all’Amatriciana, smoked pork, roast tomato and chilli and half chicken, pea, guanciale, cavalo nero.

The drinks list offers a concise selection of wines from sustainably grown grapes with most farmed biodynamically or organically and minimal intervention in the wine making process. Cocktails are a popular choice at the coastal eatery and the Tropicana with Aperol, Limoncello, Passionfruit, Pineapple and Lime tastes like summer.

Save room for dessert with decadent Tiramisu a must. If you’re craving coffee with your dessert, heads up the restaurant only offers black coffee, as they don’t have an espresso machine, not wishing to compete with the plethora of coffee shops on the popular Caba strip.

In summer, No.35 will expand with an outdoor offering and alfresco dining, the perfect spot to sip a Spritz and nibble a fish finger sandwich. Opposite the iconic Halcyon House, No.35 is sure to be a firm favourite with locals and visitors alike.

No.35 Kitchen & Bar is located in the Northern Rivers seaside town of Cabarita Beach, just 40 minutes north of Byron Bay, 20 minutes south of the Gold Coast and 90 minutes from Brisbane.
