Weekend Drinks & Cocktails – Mulled Wine

Winter is HERE! In an ultra cool week that even brought snow to Queensland, we are in little doubt that we are in the depths of winter in Australia.

This Friday, we think the weekend drink of choice should be mulled wine - that warming drink that tastes like Christmas in a glass! If you’re a wine lover, this wintery spin of spiced mulled wine is warm, flavourful and oh so comforting.

Traditionally a European drink, I’m not sure why it’s not more popular in Australia? It’s the perfect drink to warm you up on a chilly night, packed with delicious spices and takes just 20 minutes to prepare.

We think a mulled wine would be the perfect drink to enjoy fireside in the Granite Belt with the snow gently falling outside *sigh*

Mulled Wine

1 (750 ml) bottle red wine

1 Orange, sliced

¼ cup brandy (optional)

¼ cup honey or sugar

8 whole cloves

2 cinnamon sticks

2 star anise

 

Method

1               Combine all ingredients in a non-aluminum saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium-high heat.

2               Reduce heat to medium-low and let simmer for at least 15 minutes

3               Strain and serve warm
