As 2023 draws to a close, we look back at some of the extraordinary hotels and boutique accommodation that made waves this year and made us feel welcome.
The annual alluxia awards celebrate the best of the best in each of our getaway inspiration collection categories. We hope you’ll discover something new, or rediscover an old favourite and above all be inspired to travel in 2024.
Congratulations to the alluxia award winners, as we reveal the first 4 awards….
Best City Break:
Winner – Crystalbrook Albion, Sydney
A recent return visit to Little Albion solidified its well-deserved title as the ultimate urban escape. Nestled in achingly hip Surry Hills, this heritage gem quietly reveals itself as you enter through the rear laneway, where a warm welcome awaits akin to reuniting with long lost friends. Despite some rooms embracing a cosy footprint, the communal spaces generously compensate, providing a haven to relax and chill. The boutique hotel expertly captures the essence of its vibrant neighbourhood, with dining and discovery tips expertly provided by the team.
Best Coastal Cool Getaway:
Winner – Halcyon House, The Tweed
Celebrating more than 10 years since the retro motel relaunched as the ultra-luxe Halcyon House, the boutique hotel keeps going from strength. In recent times, the hotel has launched a gin book, wine dinners and long lunches with international guest speakers that keeps guests coming back for more. The latest collaboration is a holiday collection capsule wardrobe with fashion designer Sarah-Jane Clarke. Located beachside at one of Australia’s most beautiful beaches – Cabarita Beach, this seaside village is one you’ll want to linger longer in.

Best Accessible Stay:
Winner – The Woolstore 1888
Kudos to Queensland for making 2023 the Year of Accessible Tourism, this initiative has gone a long way to increase the awareness and facilities for those with accessible needs. We’d love to see more states proactive in this space. Meanwhile, we’ve stayed twice in the accessible room at Ovolo 1888 in Sydney and can vouch for its spacious design and accessible bathroom all while staying true to its overall cool aesthetic. We’ll be on the lookout for further accessible stays in 2024.
Best Wine Weekend
Winner: Polperro Villas, Mornington Peninsula
Visiting a winery is great idea, but staying on a vineyard for the weekend is even better. Enter Polperro, where you can dine, drink and stay at this magnificent estate in Red Hill. Polperro Vineyard Dining’s ever-changing menu highlights produce from their seasonal harvest from the vineyards and farm. There are three cellar door experiences to choose from as well as simply retiring to your luxury villa with stunning vineyard views.
