From coastal walks, famous blowholes to chasing waterfalls, it’s all here in Kiama, so bring a sense of adventure and discover the natural wonders, picturesque towns and vibrant villages of this stunning region.
Now more than ever we’re reminded of the importance of reconnecting to self, others and nature for our overall wellness. If you’re craving some glorious isolation, fresh air and getting back to nature here are 7 outdoor adventures you can have, just 90 minutes south of Sydney.
1. Blowholes
Kiama’s famous blowhole is actually the largest in the world! A true geographical wonder, formed from volcanic lava flows millions of years ago. Time your visit during a SE Wind/SE swell and witness the “whoosh” at its finest. Meanwhile, the lesser-known Little Blowhole is no less spectacular and likes to show off in a NE Wind/NE Swell. This natural attraction is a free attraction, open to the public year round.
2. Kiama Coast Walk
What could be better than a leisurely coastal walk soaking up sensational ocean views? The Kiama Coast Walk is made up of three sections and appeals to all fitness levels with its mix of sealed paths, grassed tracks and beach walking. Hugging the coastal curves from Minnamuura in the north, through Kiama to Gerringong’s Werri Beach in the south, the walk stretches some 20km. Start planning your walk here.
3. Minnamurra Rainforest
It might surprise you to discover that Kiama boasts a subtropical rainforest just 15 minutes inland from the coast. The Minnamurra Rainforest is located in Budderoo National Park and offers peace and serenity while you admire the lyrebirds, water dragons and swamp wallabies while marvelling at the ancient fig trees and lush ferns from a network of elevated walkways and paved tracks. Meander through the rainforest with a 1.6km Loop Walk, which is linked by suspension bridges across the Minnamurra Rivulet. How dreamy!
4. Cathedral Rocks
One for the Instagrammers as well as lovers of breathtaking beauty, Cathedral Rocks is the towering basalt rock formations the result of volcanic rocks being eroded over millions of years and located at the southern end of Jones Beach for your viewing pleasure.
5. Beaches
Blessed with nine beaches along the unspoilt coastline, you’ll find a beach to suit your mood. Whether you want to flop and drop, surf some epic breaks or simply swim in spectacular ocean rock pools you’ll find your perfect match in Kiama. Our favourite, Werri Beach is a picturesque beach ideal for sandy sunset walks, swimming or surfing.
6. Waterfalls
After you’ve enjoyed the coast, head inland to one of the spectacular waterfalls such as Minnamurra Falls or Carrington Falls. Located in the Budderoo National Park, you’ll find well developed walking trails and several lookouts to view the spectacular 50-metre drop of Carrington Falls to the gully below. While you're visiting Minnamurra Rainforest (#3) take in the beauty of Minnamurra Falls via the Falls Walk, a little more challenging than the rainforest loop walk, but oh so rewarding.
7. Surfing & SUP
Home of surfing professional Sally Fitzgibbons the laid-back vibe and friendly locals make Kiama a great spot to learn to surf. A couple of great options are the Gerringong Surf School or Gerroa Surf School. If SUP is more your style, try the Stand Up Paddle Boarding Shellharbour for fun in the sun cruising the local waterways.
Discover all this and more just 90-minutes south of Sydney. Refocus, recharge, reconnect. Kiama is calling.
